SPRAYING

Trees can be managed just like any other production crop. Spraying herbicides and other chemicals is becoming more and more common. Release spraying allows better growth due to reduced competition for light , nutrients, and water.

The rig to the right shows the huge scale of forestry spray equipment. Note the inset photo showing the spray nozzles, which are controlled from the cab to spray one or both sides as the machine moves through the stand.

Fire in the Forest!

Prescribed fire (or a controlled burn) is perhaps the best management tool a forest landowner has to produce a quality crop. Well managed and timed burns can accomplish a variety of tasks, from reducing undesirable vegetation to providing improved wildlife habitat. One critically important aspect is that a planned burn can reduce the chances of an unplanned (wildfire) burn. Management fires can be set by hand, using motorized equipment, or even by flying the fire in using helicopters.

Helicopters are the fastest method of applying forest herbicides for release. Here, a contractor sprays a recently thinned tract to boost production.
